Note for:   William Almarine Elliott,   25 Jan 1864 - 26 Sep 1947         Index

Individual Note:
MISC_NOTES: My grandmother, Mabel M. Elliott, daughter of William Almarine Elliott says that he lived on an inheritance passed down to him by his father and mother (Samuel Bell Elliott and Mary Jane Haggard) from the sale of properties owned by the Elliott family in Cumberland County, Kentucky. I believe it was for his "share" of the land the Elliotts owned prior to the Civil War. The Elliott family owned many slaves in that area and prospered until the Civil War. After the Civil War the Elliotts sold out and moved mostly to Texas to live among their southern sympathizer neighbors. William Almarine Elliott truely lived off the inheritance and lived very poorly in Texas, Arizona and eventually to New Mexico. They are both buried in the cemetery at Estancia, New Mexico. Note for:   Annie Eliza Thornton,   7 Jul 1872 - 14 Aug 1958         Index

Individual Note:
MISC_NOTES: Comments of Gary L. Foster: This is my tobacco chewing great grandmother. When I was just a boy, about 8 to 10 years of age my parents drove from New Mexico to San Diego, California. In the car in the back seat with me was my great grandmother Annie Eliza Thornton Elliott. We were taking her to see her daughter, Mable who lived in San Diego, California. All the way Annie would chew her tobacco wad and then spit the juices into a can she kept near her. It made quite an impression on me and I have never forgotton the smell of a tobacco juice can. She seemed quite old to me and kind of a stern expression on her face. She was short and stocky as I remember. I believe we have pictures of her standing with the family in San Diego, California and all my Stofer cousins.

I heard many years ago that someone in the Thornton family was retired and living in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico had the genealogy of all the Thorntons. I really wish I had that information now. I believe that was in 1976. glf

Some researchers say her name was Elida. In my family we have known her as Annie Eliza Thornton who married Samuel Bell Elliott. glf
MISC_NOTES: In 1872, the Thornton family moved near Nevada, Collin Co., TX to a farm they had rented from a Mr. Davies. The children attended school at Nevada. James Gordon was called Jim and Martha Jane was called Mattie or Matt.

Note for:   Flossie Muriel Organ,   6 Dec 1896 - 8 Apr 1998         Index

Individual Note:
     Comments of Gary L. Foster:

Dixon Bevel Elliott was a rodeo rider and left his bride, Flossie in Estancia, New Mexico while he went to ride broncos in Wyoming. They had a quarrel and he left on a bad note. He was killed by a bull and never returned to mend his relationships. His wife (AuntFlossie) kept his memory in her mind all her life.

In her 80's she was still carring for the graves of Dixon's parents William Almarine Elliott and Annie Eliza Thornton who were buried in Estancia. She took my children out to the grave yard and fussed over the weeds that had grown up around the graves and we all helped as she dressed the grounds they were buried in. She loved to wear hats and was a true christian lady.

She took us to see her church where she attended and was so proud of her congregation. She lived in a cute little house. I learned a lot about her by taping her conversation as she showed us all her pictures in the family scrap album. If she thought I was taping her she wouldn't have said a thing. I loved Aunt Flossie. We interviewed her while on a family genealogy vacation to New Mexico in 1976.
