Miscellaneous Notes from Elsie Gale's Personal Journal
In the back of her Personal Journal I typed the notes she had written to guide her as she had plans to finish her life's story. These notes contain some additional feelings she had for each of her kids and are presented here as she left them. Her daughter, Sheri Brady has Mom's Personal History of Elsie Gale Foster.
Left Gary in Nursery School with Grandma and took Ricky to visit Al while he was stationed at "The Hill" in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Rick was 8 or 9 months old.
We then moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where Al served for 18 months in the Army.
We then moved back to Arizona and lived with my brother Victor and his wife Doreen at Sacaton while waiting for our renter to move out of our Phoenix home.
I found a Ward close to the Base at Queen Creek and took the boys to Sunday School and Primary. Alton still didn't show any interest. He started the first Cub Scouts on the Base and our boys participated in scouting.
We went on allot of fishing trips with our boys.
I remember Grandma (Al's mother) wanted us to come over to San Diego and get her, then go to Estancia, New Mexico and get her mother (Annie Eliza Thornton Elliott) and then all come back with us to San Diego, California. I worked hard to get everything ready for the long trip and was pretty tired. Coming home from San Diego I showed signs of trouble. I did not tell Al's mother I was expecting. I was put to bed but miscarried. I never labored or hemorrhaged so much in my life. I was 2 and 1/2 months but nature has a way of throwing off something that is not right. We felt bad, as we were hoping for another child. I still think of it as a baby and hope someday I can have it.
My brother Victor was the second brother of mine to die. He died of cancer in 1947.
Steven Ray Foster was born February 26, 1952 in the Mesa Hospital. He sure was loved by all. My health broke down and I was confined to a rest home to recover. Many prayers were offered by everyone, especially by Alton.
Alton joined the Church in 1953 and we began to built an eternal family.
We moved to Tempe. Al was still an Assistant Fire Chief at Williams Air Force Base and began working at Dana Brothers. We joined the Tempe 1st Ward. I worked in the Mutual Improvement Association (MIA) with Myrtle Taysom.
My health was bad. We sold our Tempe home and went on a long trip to find a job and a good climate for my allergies and hay fever. We tried the Coast in California but after visiting Salt Lake City, Utah and my sister Melva & family we moved there and rented a house in Greenfield Village. Al cut meat for Ward Rasmussen.
In 1957 we bought a home or Keller Lane. Boys attended school there. We were members of the Valley View 4th Ward. I worked in the kitchen at the elementary school there.
We traded our home for a tri-level home in Sandy, Utah on Silica Drive.
Sheri was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 22, 1960.
Moved back to Tempe, Arizona so Al could work for Dana Brothers as the New Cars Sales Manager. We lived in the Brooks Apartments.
Gary returned from his mission the end of August 1963 and joined us in Arizona. He left from Utah.
Bought a home on 12th Street.
Sheri's 3rd birthday. President Kennedy assassinated.
Joined Tempe 1st Ward again. I was called as Relief Society Secretary. Lived on 12th Street 9 years.
Purchased a lot in Strawberry. Helped Al put up cabin. Sold it & bought 1/3 acre south of the 1st cabin.
Bullock built us a modular home and brought it up too us in Strawberry. We built a fireplace.
Sold the home on 12th Street and bought a Hallcraft Townhouse in South Tempe. (Tempe Ninth Ward)
We constantly went back and forth between Strawberry and Tempe. Al and I taught Sunday School classes in Strawberry.
My health was bad again.
Sheri had activities in Tempe in school and Church so we sold our Bullock home in Strawberry.
Sold the Town home after living there 3 years.
Bought a Bradley home at 1702 E. Dunbar in Tempe so Al could garden in the back yard. The nicest place we have ever had. Near Gary and his family. Sheri attended Marcos De Niza High School. We joined the Tempe 11th Ward.
We purchased 2 acres of meadow land in Strawberry from Lufkin Hunt. We plan it to be for our retirement home.
Al called to be Ward Clerk for next two years. Then he was called to be 2nd Councilor in the Bishopric. I was called to be Visiting Teacher Message Leader. My eyes began to fail me. Felt dizzy. Was released from Church calling. Had surgeries on a brain tumor and lung cancer.
Alton called to be Bishop of Pine Ward. Had many friends visit us there.
Mabel McGirk (Al's mother) came to live in Strawberry with us till she died.
Tell about each child's personality, etc. (Mom never got to finish this part.)
